Mary L. Hewitt Profile Image

Mary L. Hewitt grew up in Alliance, Nebraska. She graduated summa cum laude from Creighton University School of Law in 1992. After law school, Mary served as a clerk for the Nebraska Supreme Court and then joined the Nebraska Department of Justice and served as an Assistant Attorney General until 1994. She has been with McGill ever since and is a shareholder.

Mary’s primary practice areas include trusts and estates, employment law, health care, and litigation. Mary is one of those rare lawyers who practice different areas of law extremely well. She has extensive experience in all areas affecting employee relations, including FMLA, FLSA, ADA, Title VII, discipline and termination, EEOC charges, state and federal litigation, dispute resolution and appeals.  She assists individuals in all areas of estate planning, including wills, trusts, business succession planning, tax planning, and estate administration/probate. She also handles healthcare regulatory compliance, licensure and certifications.

Mary’s approach to her legal practice is twofold. Empathy gained from 12 years’ experience as a nurse combined with economic reality acquired while obtaining a bachelors’ degree in business administration from Creighton University, summa cum laude. Her estate planning practice is not a cookie-cutter model; she takes time to get to know the clients’ unique circumstances. When clients first meet Mary, many do not know the primary reason for having an estate plan; they just know they should have one. One of Mary’s greatest strengths is to help identify clients’ objectives and make it easy for them to understand how their estate plan will benefit their family members and protect their assets for future generations. Mary has a deep respect for her clients’ lives, future, and financial priorities.

Business owners and managers enjoy working with Mary because she is reasonable and provides straightforward answers to tough questions. She carefully weighs situations from all angles to provide pragmatic advice.

Mary is a member of the Omaha, Nebraska and American Bar Associations. She is a former board member of the City of La Vista Community Foundation and the Women’s Center for Advancement. Mary served on the City of LaVista Planning Commission for 11 years and is the current Chairman of the City of La Vista Civil Service Commission. She is also a member of the City of La Vista Personnel Board. She is recognized by The Best Lawyers in America® in the fields of Trusts & Estates and Employment Law-Management and has earned the AV Preeminent designation in Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Ratings™, the gold standard in attorney ratings.
